On this day, the American engineer Paul Edward (Ed) Yost (1919-2007) introduced the world to an innovative version of the balloon invented in 1783 by the Montgolfier brothers.

It is a modern balloon with a nylon envelope, propane tanks and a burner. As for the traditional wicker basket, Yost prefers fiberglass panels held by aluminum uprights. It started out as a military program that has been converted into a leisure challenge. Ed Yost is deemed the father of the modern hot air balloon. He worked on this project with Don Piccard (1926-2020). It took them 5 years to perform their first flight from a tethered test in October 1955. The first flight lasted 1 hour and 35 minutes.

On April 13, 1963, Yost flew across the English Channel with Don Piccard in a hot air balloon called « Channel Champ ». Taking off from Rye (England), they floated over the sea and landed at Gravelines (France).

Soon, in England, Europe, France and the world, these strange multicolored bubbles are coming back into style. Since the French revolution, they had disappeared. Only gas balloons (inflated with helium or hydrogen) had survived, especially for military and fairground uses.

From the 1980s, the balloon fashion was on the increase. To date, more than 12,000 balloonists around the world have been licensed. National and international championships, but also large gatherings are developing at high speed. The boom is mainly due to companies and communities who find in this ecological and majestic flying device the possibility to display their colors.

Still exceptional development of innovations in this field is generated by some fifty manufacturers around the world.

🇫🇷 Il y a 60 ans renaissait la montgolfière Le 22 octobre 1960, à Bruning (Nebraska), est la date historique et le lieu emblématique pour le monde de la montgolfière.
