52 ans après la livraison du premier spécimen, Boeing vient de livrer le 1574 ème exemplaire à la compagnie cargo Air Atlas. La firme américaine a organisé une grande fête pour la sortie en présence de l’acteur et pilote John Travolta. Contrairement à ce qui avait été annoncé, quelques compagnies ont remis en service cet avion mythique. On estime qu’une centaine de compagnies ont acheté cet avion totalisant 118 millions d’heures de vol. En dehors de sa consommation jugée trop importante, cet avion a été victime de deux accidents en 1977 et 1985 qui avaient fait chacun plus de 500 morts. Il n’empêche de que cet immense vaisseau des airs reste l’avion mythique utilisé par le Pape et surtout tous les présidents américains depuis George Bush. Tout amoureux de l’aviation ne peut que rester émerveillé par ce prodigieux jumbo.
