Don Piccard under eight balloons

31 Aug 2022

One of my fondest memories of GEMAB was the flight in 1995 of American Don Piccard (Bertrand Piccard’s great uncle) and one of the creators of modern aerostation with Ed Yost in the 1960s. Always looking for innovation, Don had set out to inflate eight balloons with hydrogen and take to the air under this cluster. A few journalists and many pilots knew about it because it had been difficult to hide the future exploit. Taking off from the Chambley airfield, he managed to reach the Montsec hill (American territory near Chambley). An incredible feat that remains in the annals.
