Mercredi dernier lors de la Coupe Gordon Bennett de ballons à gaz, au décollage de Bristol (Angleterre), l’un des trois équipages américains (Richard Abruzzo et Carol Davis) a disparu des écrans radar alors qu’il survolait la Mer Adriatique entre l’Italie et la Croatie. Pendant quatre jours d’importants moyens aériens et nautiques ont été déployés pour tenter de les retrouver, sans succès. Richard Abruzzo était natif d’Albuquerque. Passionné de compétitions aéronautiques, il avait remporté notamment la Coupe Gordon Bennett depuis Thionville en 2004. Victime d’un grave accident de ballon à gaz pendant l’America’s Challenge au décollage d’Albuquerque en 2005, il s’était battu férocement pour remarcher alors que tout le monde pensait qu’il resterait sur une chaise. Nous l’avions invité comme président et parrain de la dernière édition de la manifestation de montgolfières à Thionville en 2008. Sa disparition laisse un trop grand vide.

Last Wednesday, during the International gas balloon race Gordon Bennett (Bristol/England), one of the three American crews (Richard Abruzzo and Carol Davis) disappeared from the screen radar while flying over the Adriatic Sea between Italy and Croatia. During four days important aerial and nautical rescues were deployed to find them, without any success. Richard Abruzzo was native of Albuquerque. Fascinated by aeronautics competitions, he has won the Gordon Bennett Cup in Thionville (France) in 2004. Victim of a serious gas balloon incident during America’s Challenge in Albuquerque in 2005, he had fought to walk again while everyone thought he would stay on a wheelchair. We invited him as a president for the last edition of the hot air balloons gathering in Thionville (France) in 2008. His disappearance leaves a deep void.
